Published Mon 03 Mar 2025

The City Dragons – Tāmaki Makaurau made a splash in their debut at the 2025 Wellington Dragon Boat Festival, returning home with a silver medal in their Final.

Competing for the first time at Wellington, the Auckland-based crew demonstrated incredible determination, consistency, and teamwork, achieving strong race times across all three heats to secure their spot in their divisional Final. With every paddle stroke, the crew pushed hard, leaving it all on the water and earning the well-deserved podium finish.

“Our crew gave everything,” said the City Dragons coaches. “We’re so proud of the effort, and teamwork each paddler showed. To medal in our very first Wellington Festival is so exciting, and we're raring to go for the Regional Championships at Lake Pupuke in a few weeks' time.”

The festival’s electric atmosphere, with teams from across New Zealand competing in fierce but friendly competition, added to the excitement. City Dragons embraced the challenge and showcased the skill and camaraderie that have become hallmarks of the Auckland team.

Founded to blend community, competition, and fun, the City Dragons train twice weekly at Westhaven Marina on the Waitematā Harbour and welcome paddlers of all skill levels. Their mix of social spirit and competitive drive has seen them rise quickly in the dragon boating community.

The silver medal in Wellington is another milestone in City Dragons’ journey, reinforcing their motto: Work Hard, Play Harder! Interested Aucklanders are encouraged to come try a session and experience the thrill of team paddling with City Dragons.

Training times: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30pm, Westhaven Marina, Auckland.
